Other names for hypersexuality behaviors include sexual addiction, sexual dependency, compulsive masturbation, nympho, Messalina complex which is a powerful influential woman who is sexually promiscuous and many other names. Hypersexual women are nymphomaniacs which is a female who is abnormally obsessed with uncontrollable sexual desire. Researchers believe that it is a mental disorder or classified as a mental diagnosis. Hypersexuality is a symptom of people who have bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder or attention deficit disorder. Alcohol and drug abuse such as using meth can attribute to social and sexual inhibitions. Impulsive behaviors are another alternate explanation for hypersexuality. Other factors causing hypersexuality is lack of physical contact, or biological factors such as changes in the menstrual cycle. As hypersexuality progresses low self-esteem is expected.
It is believed that repetitive high frequency sexual behavior may change neural circuitry which carries on hypersexuality. People who engage in hypersexuality behaviors do it because they may want to reduce stress or tension and not for the reason of expressing sexual feelings with one another. Sexual behaviors of this nature isn't defined by who or what an individual finds arousing but by repetitive sexual behaviors to manage emotional triggers meaning the person will have sex with whomever is available if they are feeling some sort of way emotionally. In other words people with these characteristics use sex to soothe them as a way of coping with stressful events. Having sex with others for this reason is only a temporary solution a continual cycle of impulsive sexual behavior will repeat.
Sex addiction possibly is the result to abuse or trauma early in life. People who show hypersexuality tendencies are spellbound with fantasy sex, masturbation, pornography, and constantly hunting for sex partners new and old. People who are sexually addicted are more engaged in finding a sex partner than the sexual act itself. This is the high of their addiction, searching for the next great orgasmic pleasure that is better than the one before or they've ever had. These types of people want to engage in unrealistic sexual fantasies such as ménage a trois or group sex since they are intensely addicted to a sexual fantasy lifestyle. Sexual addiction treatment is like a 12-step program similar to the alcoholic anonymous program.
